Sports Club Festival in Saarland

Sports club festivals are a category of their own in the Saarland's Volksfest (public festival) scene: they combine club life with village tradition and offer members a way to finance the club. The SSV Wellesweiler – a sports club with a long tradition in the Neunkirchen district – hosts its Rasenplatzfest every year in June. The format has been established for decades.

Wellesweiler – District of Neunkirchen

Wellesweiler is one of the larger districts of the Saarland industrial city of Neunkirchen. With its own local council and active club life, the district maintains an identity distinct from the centre of Neunkirchen. SSV Wellesweiler is one of the most important meeting points for the district's residents.

Three Days at the Sports Field

The Rasenplatzfest takes place over a weekend, from Friday to Sunday. The sports field transforms into a festival meadow with a beer tent, food stalls, and live music. During the day, sports events usually take place – matches of the club's teams or tournaments – while in the evening, cover bands and DJ sets take over the programme.

Club Catering with Saarland Classics

As with most Saarland club festivals, catering is handled by the club itself. The menu features the classics: 'Schwenker' from the charcoal grill (the Saarland national dish), Lyoner sausage, fries, salads, and cold beer. Prices are moderate – the festival is a social gathering, not a commercial event.

In the Neunkirchen District

Neunkirchen, with almost 50,000 inhabitants, is the second-largest city in Saarland after Saarbrücken. The former steel and mining town has undergone extensive structural change in recent decades – today, services and the striking "Saarpark-Center" shopping mall characterise the cityscape. The districts, such as Wellesweiler, have preserved their village structures and club life.
